The Short Story and the Essay
By Jacob Malewitz
Where does the short story end and begin? You must call building. You are always building with short stories. You are always selling with short stories. You must always call the balance with non-fiction, especially creative non-fiction. If you call creative non-fiction, you call the essay. If you call the essay, you call the book. If you call the book, you call profit.
Profit is fleeting. Hope is not. How much do you want to make off your short story? What can you get from writing this short story? You get broken essay hope; you get some fear; you get some demons calling you out to write endlessly. You can experience emotion far better with writing than with television.
All things should respect the short story art. The short story art is divine. If you call the short story too much, you call emotions to much. You live off the emotions. It brings you bread. It brings you luxury. You sell that short story and buy a new computer; that's what you do.
Where does the essay begin? How can you get going with the essay? You can write fiction instead. You can read instead. You can always escape the short story with an essay. You can always escape the essay and the short story with reading. Reading is an art form, subject to man, called out by all poets who call chess.
There is a silence in the city when you write short fiction and essays. It can be quite hellish, it can be heavenly, and it can bring food.
All short stories sell at some point or another. All essayists call out for poets to go mad. The short story can make you go mad. The essay can make you go mad.
How would the essay make you go mad?
How would the short story sell? I have no secrets: they simply sell in time. If you keep going, they always sell. Small fame, new fame, all fame – these things build over time. That short story makes you a better writer, and it makes you a fiction writer, no sale today or no sale tomorrow.
The essay can make you go mad because it explores your mind. Your essay is your power. Your essay can bring bread. Your essay can bring emotions.
Should money always be called. There are no secrets. You always continue with the essay and the short story: they are brothers.
What genre should your short story be? Be what you read. Be what you watch. Experience your film, write your science fiction short. Experience your essay, go mad with power. Go with your essay, start strategizing. Go with your blog, start publishing.
Fill up a notebook.
Why fill up a notebook? It is your power. It is your journal. You can draw letters here. You can pray here. You can have happiness here.
Fill up your notebook. Master your computer. Play with strategy. Escape. Quit. Give up on all writing. Then go back to your emotions, to your feelings, to your hope in the rain.
